Storms and extreme weather conditions have thrown the Western Australian power grid into turmoil, with several thousand homes still without power on Saturday.

According to Western Power, at least 4000 homes and businesses are still without power after Significant thunderstorm and bushfire activity cut the power to around 33,000 people.

Parts of the Perth Hills and around Kalgoorlie were worst affected by the ongoing outage.

A Western Power Executive Zane Christmas said yesterday their “aim was to get power back on to most customers in the next few days.” 

“There will be some customers who remain without power for a longer duration,” he said.

He said while there has been considerable progress there was still a lot of work to be done.

“Community and crews’ safety is paramount. 

“We urge the community to treat all damaged infrastructure as live.”

1130 homes were without power around Meriden and Bruce Rock in the state’s wheatbelt district.

A further 930 homes around Mount Helena and Perth’s east were affected.

In total the Western Power outage website indicated at least 4,000 customers were affected, spread all over the state.

Bushfires, lightning strikes and strong winds had brought down power lines.

The state’s recent severe heatwave also impacted power supply.
