A six-day funeral event has begun to mourn the death of former US president Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29 at age 100.

The procession began in his tiny hometown of Plains, Georgia, where thousands of people lined the streets to pay their respects to the late 39th president.

Former and current US Secret Service agents assigned to the Carter detail carried Carter’s flag-draped casket at Phoebe Sumter Medical Centre in Americus, Georgia, on January 4.

Carter’s casket travelled through Plains and past his childhood home on a peanut farm, and headed towards Atlanta.
