A decades-old postcard has shown up at a home in the United Kingdom after being shipped from Australia more than 40 years ago.

The postcard was written and posted by a man named Barry from Dawes Point in Sydney on August 27, 1981, and it was addressed to Steve Pagett in Kent, UK.

The handwritten letter didn’t arrive until earlier this month, being delivered to the current homeowner, Samantha Williams.

Williams is determined to get the postcard to Pagett, who has been waiting four decades for correspondence from his mate, Barry.

“Dear Padge,” the postcard reads, “you won’t believe this but have just read your letter dated May 8 (three months earlier).”

“Sorry to not have been in touch, but what can you say ’bout colonial practices!

“Hope you enjoyed summer, will write tomorrow, having a brilliant time.”

Williams thinks the postcard, featuring a picture of the iconic Sydney Opera House, may have gotten stuck in a post office due to the 35-cent stamp on the front.

Since the letter was shipped in 1981, the world has changed significantly.

The internet was created just two years later in 1983, followed by the end of the Cold War in 1991.

Princess Diana passed away in 1997, and the Sydney Olympics were held in 2000.

It’s unclear what Barry and Pagett have been up to since, but Williams says she’s determined to find out.
