The Apprentice may have ended years ago, but Whoopi Goldberg thinks President Donald Trump‘s reality TV days are far from over. On this morning’s episode of The View, she and her co-hosts discussed the mass deportations that are already going into effect one week after Trump took office for his second term, and the strong reaction that’s followed.
The Hot Topics table first launched into conversation of Selena Gomez‘s emotional response to Trump’s immigration policies, which she posted, then deleted, on Instagram yesterday. Gomez cried as she said, “All my people are being attacked, and children.”
Her sadness didn’t bring about any empathy from border czar Tom Homan, though, who asked, “Where’s the tears for [sex-trafficked children]?” in response to her post. His words set off a debate among the co-hosts, who wondered if the country has a problem with empathy.
Goldberg wondered why Trump isn’t deporting people who “are in jail already,” which prompted Joy Behar to quip, “He’d have to send the Jan. 6 people back, too.”
As the audience cheered, Behar grinned, then asked, “I’m wondering, why is Dr. Phil there? What is Dr. Phil doing there?” referring to footage the show had played moments earlier showing Dr. Phil McGraw joining ICE for an immigration raid in Chicago on Sunday (Jan. 26).
McGraw said he “embedded” with ICE as they tracked down “known criminals and terrorists,” per NBC News. He does not currently hold a formal role within the Trump administration.
While Goldberg didn’t answer Behar’s question, she told her, “‘Cause it’s now a reality show. This is the new reality show.”
She added, “I’m hoping that we can put music behind this, because it’s only gonna be a matter of weeks before we start to see, I mean, just folks showing up. What is, what is, what are we — what is going on?”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
