On today’s episode of The View, comedians Sandra Bernhard and Judy Gold joined the hosts to discuss their new Netflix documentary Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, a look at the history of queer stand-up comedy.
The two comedians are longtime friends of View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, so the mood was casual and the conversation flowed freely — at one point venturing into intimate territory.
Initially things started off with Bernhard promoting the film, explaining that the documentary was made to “remind people of how beautiful and incredible all performers are, especially gay performers. We are the soul of entertainment.”
“We are the truth tellers,” Gold added. The two women then discussed their experiences coming out of the closet, with Gold reminding Behar that she came out only after Behar prompted her.
“I don’t know if you remember, we were sitting at the bar at Catch A Rising Star,” Gold told Behar, “and you were like, ‘Um, Judy, Larry Amaro said you were a lesbian. Is that true?’”
“That is so Joy!” Sunny Hostin said.
“Here’s a question,” Bernhard then interjected, asking Behar, “Have you ever gotten it on with a lady?”
“No, but some day I will,” Behar said, laughing.
“You better hurry up, Joy!” Bernhard replied.
Not to be left out, Sara Haines then spoke of her own experiences, telling Bernhard that she’s been to the famed lesbian bar the Cubby Hole.
“I haven’t seen you there,” Gold joked.
Behar then joked of Haines, “She’s a closet lipstick lesbian.”
“I went to Smith College. I played on a gay volleyball league,” Haines declared, desperately trying to make fetch happen.
“You’re gay-adjacent,” Goldberg told her before moving on, which seemed to satisfy Haines.
