Experts have warned black fixtures are a hassle overtime as it tends to chip easily, is difficult to clean and fingerprints are easily visible

Cleaners and builders have warned homeowners to avoid installing black fixtures in their bathrooms for three key reasons.

The trendy style may look appealing, but experts have warned the décor will become a hassle as it tends to chip easily, is difficult to clean and shows up fingerprints.

The warning was issued in a Facebook group when a woman who admired black bathroom fittings asked for inspiration.

Many shared images and videos of their black bathtubs, showers, taps and toilets, but one woman shared a piece of advice she was given from a builder.

‘Love black too but my builder told me to stay away unless I love cleaning. He said the fingerprints and smudges would drive me crazy. He did it in his place and regrets it now,’ she wrote.

Earlier this year professional cleaner Kate Croukamp, from Mates Rates Bond on the Gold Coast, shared her view on why the interior design choice should be avoided.

Kate claimed black sinks and taps were a ‘terrible’ idea because of the potential for calcium build up.

Matte black fittings are particularly hard to maintain with children involved, as fingerprints and food stains tend to cling to them.

‘They look amazing but they’re a nightmare to clean and every single finger and mark can be seen,’ she said.

In a video she also recommended against other fittings including glass shutter windows, vertical blinds, trench drains and mirrored splashbacks.

Elsewhere on Reddit another person shared their experience when renovating their bathroom and was also told to steer clear of the design.

‘I love the look of black fixtures. Yesterday I was told by a salesperson to avoid them because they aren’t very durable and look terrible over time,’ the Redditor wrote.

Others agreed and claimed they too have heard similar words of wisdom.
