The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is urging people not to purchase Ziyinzhuangyang tablets, which claim to treat male erectile dysfunction, warning they pose a serious risk to health.

Testing by the federal government agency has revealed the pills contain the undeclared substance sildenafil.

Sildenafil can interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, potentially lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels.

People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease are often prescribed nitrates.

The TGA says sildenafil, whether taken alone or in combination with other medication, can cause serious side effects.

“Consumers are reminded that sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine in Australia.

“The supply of Ziyinzhuangyang tablets containing undisclosed sildenafil is illegal.

The Ziyinzhuangyang tablets can be purchased from an overseas website but have not been tested by the TGA for quality, safety or efficacy. Neither has the place of manufacture.

People who have the pills should take them to their local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Anyone with health concerns from taking the tablets should contact their doctor.

The TGA is working with the Australian Border Force (ABF) to help stop future shipments of Ziyinzhuangyang tablets entering Australia.
