Police were called to the Monash Freeway near Hallam, south-east Melbourne, following reports of a multi-car crash between South Gippsland Freeway and Belgrave-Hallam Road about 8.30am today.
Bystanders reported seeing six teenagers – four boys and two girls – climb out of a badly-damaged Nissan hatchback and attempt to flee the scene, police say.
Those who saw the crash stopped the uninjured children from leaving until police arrived.
“It’s mind boggling to be honest, why this keeps continuing every day,” witness Adam Jensen told 9News.
Other bystanders told 9News they saw the car careen 20 metres across the highway before slamming into a tree.
The male driver of the second car was uninjured, however his car was significantly damaged.
Police say the Nissan was stolen from an address in Gippsland on January 6.
The six teenagers were taken into custody and have been interviewed by police.
Anyone with dashcam footage of the incident have been urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
