A 19-year-old man who was allegedly behind the wheel of a car that hit and killed a Brisbane woman last week has been released on bail.

Orlando Tauaa is accused of driving double the speed limit while unaccompanied on his learner license.

Tess Watschur, 35, was walking on a footpath near the intersection of Kessels and Riawena roads in Coopers Plains before 5am on Thursday when she was hit by a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The force of the collision propelled her through a fence.

She died at the scene, while the driver of the Lancer was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

After an appeal for information last week, police charged the 19-year-old from Logan Reserve with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while excessively speeding and being an unaccompanied learner driver.

Police allege he was driving solo on his learner licence at speeds of 144km/h in a 70 zone.

Police opposed Tauaa’s bail.

“He is a danger to the community, a danger to people on the road,” police prosecutor Jeanette Mitchell said.

Tauaa was granted bail but he will banned from driving and was required to surrender his passport.

He will return to court next month.
