A critical incident has been declared after a teenager died and three others were hospitalised in a crash during a pursuit with police in northern New South Wales.

Police were called to Burroway Road in Narromine about 11.15pm yesterday over reports of a petrol station robbery.

Four teenagers are alleged to have fled the scene in a stolen car but were found 15km east of Nyngan on the Mitchell Highway about 12.08am.

According to police, officers began a pursuit but terminated it a short time later. They then reinitiated the chase in Coolabah about 12.45am.

Despite police deploying two sets of road spikes in Coolabah and Bourke, the car continued into the township of Bourke.

Police said officers were still in pursuit when the car crashed and rolled on Weir Road in Bourke about 1.30am.

“Police immediately rendered assistance to the four occupants of the car,” police said.

A 17-year-old boy died at the scene and three other boys were taken to Bourke Hospital.

A 13-year-old boy remains at the hospital in a serious condition while a 16-year-old boy is in a stable condition.

A 14-year-old boy was flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital in serious condition.

Crash Investigation Unit officers are examining the crime scene and a critical incident team are investigating the circumstances around the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
