Dozens of firefighters have brought a “significant and intense” blaze at a Sydney warehouse under control and managed to save three nearby buildings which had been under threat from flames.

About 8.20pm, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the fire in a timber warehouse on Woorang Street in Milperra had been contained.

The fire is expected to remain alight for several more hours as the centre burns “fierce” but firefighters have managed to save the adjoining buildings.

“(It’s) still too early to say how this fire started but fire investigators have arrived on scene and they’ll start to have their initial inquiries, along with police,” Dewberry said.

He added that 18 fire trucks and more than 60 firefighters remained on the scene, with Milperra Road remaining closed.

Bankstown Airport continues to stay open – the airport was put on alert as thick black smoke billowed from the fire but never closed.

There were minimal evacuations from the warehouse and no injuries reported, Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed.
