Dozens of Sydney trains have been cancelled or delayed due to urgent track repairs, sparking travel chaos for commuters during rush hour.

Sydneysiders were left scrambling on Thursday morning after several lines were cancelled due to ‘communication issues’ at Martin Place Station.

Commuters catching a train to the city from the eastern and western suburbs have been forced to seek another mode of transport to get to school and work on time.

They were advised to double-check their train is still running on the Transport NSW website and listen for announcements for any changes at the station.

Long queues began to form at a bus station at Bondi Junction as frustrated commuters waited for alternative transport to take them to their destination.

Trains between Bondi Junction and Central Station on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line were stopped for about half an hour before resuming at 8am.

A Transport NSW spokesperson said the cancellations were due to ‘urgent track repairs at Martin Place’.

‘Passengers should also allow plenty of extra travel time, listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates,’ the spokesperson said.

One traveller described the rush hour disruptions as total ‘chaos’.

‘It’s chaos, nobody knows what’s going on,’ they wrote on Twitter.

‘The train staff were coy about the situation at Martin place, just that a situation has happened and that all trains to the city are cancelled until further notice.

‘Now hundreds of people are crowding the street trying to get on a bus to the city.’

Dozens of commuters were left stranded between platforms for several minutes before services finally resumed at 8am.

‘Eastern suburbs trains have been cancelled for the foreseeable future due to a “communications issue” at Martin Place,’ one commuter tweeted.

A third shared: ‘Sydney trains are awful. My train has been stopped in the middle of nowhere for 15 minutes, no communication, no nothing and now I’m going to be 15 minutes late to my destination’.

Commuters have been warned delays will continue throughout the day and they have been advised to delay their trip or catch a bus instead.
