Fire and Rescue NSW were called to Bankstown station after reports a passenger brought an item onto a train and lit it on fire

A Sydney train has been evacuated after a passenger lit a fire in one of the carriages.

Fire crews rushed to Bankstown station where the train was stopped about 12pm Saturday. 

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the passenger brought an item, understood to be insulation, on the train and set it alight.

‘A patron brought something on the train and lit it on fire,’ the spokesman said.

The fire was put out and there were no injuries.

Trains in the area are running normally once more.
