Commuters have been slammed with major delays in Sydney with several peak-hour train services cancelled.

Transport New South Wales said a ‘staff resourcing issue’ is causing the cancellations – believed to be a key worker who has called in sick.

T1 Western and T5 Cumberland lines were completely stopped in both directions at around 3.30 on Thursday afternoon, with commuters having to use buses instead.

The T1 North Shore and the T2 Inner West and Leppington lines were also affected.

‘Some service gaps and longer journey times are expected on the T1 North Shore and Western, T2 Inner West and Leppington, T5 Cumberland and T9 Northern Lines throughout the evening,’ a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

‘A limited number of buses are replacing trains between Parramatta and St Marys, and between Parramatta and Richmond on the T1 Western Line, the T5 Cumberland Line and the Blue Mountains Line due to a staff resourcing issue.

‘Sydney Trains apologises for the inconvenience and thanks our passengers for their patience.’

More to come.
