Up to 18 people have been swept out to sea at a seaside town in Victoria, sparking a mass rescue operation involving a police helicopter. 

Ambulance Victoria were called to reports of a water incident at Point Lonsdale, 30km south of Geelong, about 11:45am on Saturday. 

It’s understood multiple swimmers and kayakers had to be rescued after they were dragged out to sea by strong currents. 

All were rescued from the water and were treated by paramedics at the scene. 

The Police Air Wing, Lifesaving Australia, Water Police and the coast guard attended.  

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Victoria Police in relation to the incident.
