A BMW driver who fatally struck a 30-year-old woman in what witnesses describe as a ‘horrific’ accident is being investigated for potential speeding.
The 38-year-old man crashed into the woman along the Esplanade in Surfers Paradise at about about 3.30pm on Thursday.
Paramedics attended the scene near Trickett Street and the woman, who the Gold Coast Bulletin reported was a foreign national living in Surfers Paradise, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital but died of her injuries.
The BMW driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Surfers Paradise resident Leo Rodino said he heard what sounded like an ‘explosion’ at the time of the incident.
‘I was in my apartment and I heard shots like an explosion,’ he said.
‘It must have been the moment he hit the girl. I came out for a walk and saw the police and knew something was going on.’
A witness who saw the crash said the woman was sent flying off the scooter.

‘The message always is that we ask people to slow down and drive to the conditions.
