A 30-year-old woman on an e-scooter died after being struck by a BMW in Surfers Paradise on Thursday (the white car was not involved)

A BMW driver who fatally struck a 30-year-old woman in what witnesses describe as a ‘horrific’ accident is being investigated for potential speeding.

The 38-year-old man crashed into the woman along the Esplanade in Surfers Paradise at about about 3.30pm on Thursday.

Paramedics attended the scene near Trickett Street and the woman, who the Gold Coast Bulletin reported was a foreign national living in Surfers Paradise, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital but died of her injuries.

The BMW driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Surfers Paradise resident Leo Rodino said he heard what sounded like an ‘explosion’ at the time of the incident.

‘I was in my apartment and I heard shots like an explosion,’ he said.

‘It must have been the moment he hit the girl. I came out for a walk and saw the police and knew something was going on.’

A witness who saw the crash said the woman was sent flying off the scooter.

‘Very horrific, (she) flew up and it was like doing triple somersaults,’ the witness told Seven News.

‘It does appear we’re investigating a serious accident where speed has been a factor, and also, potentially, the scooter rider was not wearing a helmet,’ Queensland Police duty officer Chris Tritton told Seven News.

‘The message always is that we ask people to slow down and drive to the conditions.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact police.
