A man was winched to safety on the weekend after he started struggling in the surf off Torquay, Victoria.

The surfer was in the water with four friends off Jan Juc Beach on Saturday, August 31, and was trying to return to shore just after 11am.

He began struggling against the conditions and was pushed to the rocks near the beach car park.

The 21-year-old St Leonards man was able to climb onto a rock, from which he was winched to safety by Victoria Police Air Wing.

He was unhurt by the ordeal.
