I had a wonderful and refreshing week traveling in central Utah, near the Joe’s Valley reservoir.
I was traveling with my father, whose 2nd career has been as a photographer and writer of books on conservation. His politics are center-left and mine are…not. We had vigorous discussions about politics, and he was very polite and receptive, even when I got overly passionate. I think I made some progress in my primary goal in those discussions: trust not the MSM!
Dad even liked Matt Walsh’s “What is a Woman?” And he, at least, gets Matt’s humor. He guffawed several times. Progress.
Somehow we timed our trip perfectly. The fall colors were simply amazing, with both aspens and maple trees turning color. The aspens were so bright yellow it almost hurt your eyes, and the maples were a deep red. The landscapes were unreal. Seriously.
A fire in the past couple of years had left some burnt tree trunks, and the new aspens growing among the old made gorgeous, colorful patterns.
It has been many years since I did any serious nature photography, so I will spend months editing the photos to get them right. But I made some quick and dirty edits and I thought I would share a few of the 7500 photographs I took on the trip. (No, I will only edit a few hundred that strike me as interesting enough).
And yes, the sky was surreally blue. You just don’t get such deep blue skies in Minnesota, or anyplace where there is more water in the air.
Here are some panoramas my father took:

Utah is a lovely state with lovely people. The Mormon influence is everywhere, although if you didn’t know that you would just wonder why everything is so clean, neat, and peaceful. My father, who is an atheist, jokes that if he had to live in a theocracy, it would be under Mormons. Utah (and Idaho) seems to be a state where people are kind and decent, and don’t spend every moment plotting to kill each other.
If you know differently, don’t tell me. I like believing that there is a place that still works in America.
Now, on to the fun!
