Sunday Smiles

Through the magic of internet scheduling, I am communicating with you from the past.

Friday, to be exact.

Right now I am wandering around someplace in Utah, hiking with my dad. Probably photographing. Perhaps cursing the weather. Hard to say, actually, as your right now is my future, and I am pretty bad at predicting the future.

That’s good because my gut tells me that the future for the West isn’t looking so bright. My record of failure at prognostication gives me hope, though, as does my faith in my fellow Americans. Things looked pretty crappy in 1932, 1941, 1979, and plenty of other times in history. Then again, the pessimists of 1860 turned out to be right.

All of this is to say that the right attitude is to put your head down, live a good life, and do what you can to make your corner of the world a better place. None of us can fix the world, but we can make an impact right here and right now.

I am pretty bad at following this good advice, which is one of the reasons I need this vacation I am on.

That vacation is in my future but in your present. This time displacement thing is weird.

It is possible that I will toss off a post or two in my downtime, but frankly, I hope I don’t feel the urge. If not, Sunday Smiles will be my first post back, and that, too will be cleansing.

I do feel sorry for you guys, who will be deprived of my wit and wisdom for a few days. I know that this will be a difficult time for you.

But I am certain you will get through it largely unscathed.
