Almost a dozen schools across New South Wales reverted to pandemic-era learning from home this week amid multiple COVID-19 outbreaks.

9News understands 11 schools in the state had at least one learning from home day this week for some cohorts.

These included Martindale Public School (two days), Orange High School (four days), Yawarra Community School (two days), Kincumber High School (two days), Cammeray Public School (two days), Carenne School (three days), Liverpool Girls High School (three days), Parkes High school (two days), Kemps Creek (three days), Karabar High School (two days) and Five Islands Secondary College (one day).

The classroom absences were due to a combination of student and teacher COVID-19 cases, with 11 of 67 teaching staff at Liverpool Girls High School absent with the virus.

Currently, there are no schools scheduled to have any students learning from home next week.

“We know the best place for our students is the classroom. Learning from home is used for a short period of time when increased cases impact a large number of staff and students,” a Department of Education spokesperson said.

“The decision to return to COVID-safe measures at a school is made after a thorough risk assessment with the wellbeing and safety of students and staff our key consideration.”

The spokesperson said teacher shortages were also playing a role in the decisions.

“Students in those years who are unable to learn from home will be provided with supervision should they attend school.”
