One of the cars involved in a multi-vehicle crash that killed three people in Queensland this morning had allegedly been stolen at knifepoint in an earlier incident.

Three vehicles collided in a southbound lane of the Bruce Highway at Federal, west of the Sunshine Coast. The crash occurred just after 4am, next to exit 244.

Police have confirmed three people are dead, and a fourth person, a man in his 30s, has been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after suffering a head wound.

Nine News understands that one of the cars, an Isuzu SUV, had been stolen yesterday afternoon in Gympie, about 30km from where the crash took place.

A 31-year-old mother had been returning to her car with her three young children when she was approached by a man with a knife, who demanded the car.

She complied, getting her kids out of the car before he drove off.

It’s unknown if the same man allegedly involved in the theft of the vehicle was involved in the collision this morning.

One witness told Today she had driven past the collision moments after it occurred.

“We just saw this car completely just squished up against the concrete, between the two different lanes,” she said.
