Hundreds of Civil War era gold coins pulled from the ground of a US cornfield are worth a staggering $2 million, a formal valuation has found.

A Kentucky man found the buried treasure on his farm earlier this year when he pulled more than 700 gold – and a handful of silver coins – from the dry brown dirt.

The haul is now known as the “Great Kentucky Hoard” and have now been valued by the Numismatic Guaranty Company’s (NGC) Certified Collectibles Group.

Amongst the horde were 20 $10 Liberty coins, eight $20 Liberty coins – and the rarest – a staggering 18 1863-P $20 1-ounce gold Liberty coin.

Just one of these can go for six figures and the coins were sold on GovMint.

“Each of the coins that are part of the Great Kentucky Hoard are struck in 90 per cent gold at the Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans or Carson City Mints,” a statement from GovMint said.
