The son of a former fugitive who shot himself dead after a standoff with police is behind bars accused of a stabbing rampage in Moonee Ponds.

Daniel Clavell, 36, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today charged with dozens of offences including recklessly causing injury, assault with a weapon and armed robbery.

The 36-year-old accused is the son of former fugitive Rodney Clavell, who shot himself inside an Adelaide brothel in 2014 during a 12-hour standoff with police.

Two of Daniel Clavell’s brothers were also jailed in 2020 after attacking police with an axe.

The Broadmeadows man faced court, where it was heard he suffered from schizophrenia.

He was remanded to appear in court again in October.

In a statement to 9News regarding yesterday’s incident, Victoria Police said they were undertaking a thorough investigation supported by specialist police.

They have not found any indication that there was an ideological motivation for the incident.

Moonee Ponds locals today rallied around the owner of Amazing Bargains, Jain, who was injured.

“We really hope she recovers quickly. She is a wonderful woman,” one local said.

Jain and William have owned the store for nearly 10 years and today their daughter arrived today to pick up their belongings and pack up the store, which will remain closed until Jain makes a full recovery.

An 81-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman who were also allegedly stabbed remain in a stable condition in hospital.

A man in his 30s has been discharged.
