A six-legged puppy found abandoned outside a supermarket in the UK has successfully undergone a rare operation to remove her additional limbs.

The 11-week-old spaniel, affectionately named Ariel, was dumped in a supermarket carpark at Pembrokeshire, Wales, in September last year.

Discovered with multiple birth defects including two hip joints and two additional limbs which were fused together, she was taken in by Greenacres Rescue charity and an appeal was launched for life-changing corrective surgery.

Ariel was successfully operated on at Langford Vets small animal referral hospital this week.

“Our wonderful and special little spaniel has been discharged from Small Animal Referral Hospital Langford Vets University of Bristol and is back in the comforts of her wonderful foster home,” Greenacres Rescue said in a social media post.

“The procedure went as well and to be expected and now she’s got a few weeks of recovery, the staff at Langford have been wonderful and we could not ask for better service.

“Ariel has to now rest for the next 10 to 14 days to recover and we will post updates over that time.”‘

It was initially thought Ariel would require a third limb removed due to the structure of the additional limbs and pelvis.

A CT scan also discovered Ariel had only one kidney, an additional vulva and other anomalies, which added to the complexity of her medical treatment.

The founder and manager of Greenacres Rescue, Mikey Lawlor, posted an update on Ariel’s recovery to his social media following the surgery.

“Today has been the most tiring but to know we are now on the ‘final stretch’ with Ariel’s journey has made me very proud, emotional and grateful,” he said.

“I’ve said it many times my childhood dream was to start a centre that could help as many animals as possible, and with your support that’s exactly what we do.
