A sinkhole has opened up on one of Brisbane’s busiest roads, threatening to delay motorists for hours as authorities investigate the structural integrity of the rest of the road.

Authorities have closed off two lanes of Coronation Drive in Auchenflower after the hole opened up today.

Traffic is expected to be bumper-to-bumper during peak hour and motorists are urged to find an alternative route or expect big delays.

The sinkhole was discovered by a driver at about 4am today.

It measures about 1.5m wide and a metre deep.

Council workers have to open it up further with large machinery to determine just how far it stretches, and have warned the delays could last four hours.

The lanes are expected to remain closed until about lunchtime.
