As the clock struck midnight and fireworks erupted across Australia, some families grew by one as the first babies of the new year were born.

In New South Wales, Kaneisi Kanongataa entered the world with a bang.

Her mum was booked in for a C-section tomorrow but surprised her parents at 4.44am this morning following a lightning-speed, less than two-hour labour at Auburn Hospital.

In Queensland, Indiana made her grand entrance as the clock struck 12.01am at Gold Coast University Hospital.

“It was timing pretty close to midnight and the midwife said there was another lady getting ready to push so I was determined to make it the first one then,” mum Georgie Scott said.

In Victoria, second-time parents Kareen and Ori are still deciding on a name for their baby girl, who interrupted a New Year’s Eve dinner.

“We saw all the partygoers on their way home while we were coming in. It was our biggest New Year’s Eve in a few years,” mum Kareen said.

The first babies born in South Australia and Western Australia are yet to be revealed.
