It shows shark attacks in Australian waters are on the rise.

Between 1990 and 2000 — on average — nine people were bitten each year.

In the decade between 2010 and 2020, that swelled to 22.

New South Wales leads the country in shark incidents, with 439 on record.

Paul Butcher said wet weather can make attacks more likely, as fish will be more active and might attract sharks.

“If you see those sort of scenarios – it’s probably not the sort of place you want to be in the water,” he said.

“Our coastline is beautiful and we’re just adding that extra layer of protection through our drones, our drum lines and our shark listing stations.”
