Seeing Red: ‘The View’s Biggest Feuds of 2023 So Far

We watch a lot of The View  here at Decider. In fact, we tune in every day, as we’ve been doing for years, and we’ve come to know everyone on the evolving panel, which has consisted of dozens of names over the seasons but currently features Ana Navarro, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar.

While we’ve seen sweet moments between the co-hosts, who celebrate each other’s professional success and personal milestones, we’ve also witnessed some chillier times around the Hot Topics table.

As any View fan knows, the co-hosts aren’t afraid to get a bit — okay, very — heated as they share their takes on some of the biggest issues of the day, from politics to etiquette and nearly everything in between. Even NSFW topics aren’t off the table. And while we’re only halfway through the year so far, we’ve already witnessed our fair share of blowouts, yelling matches and confrontations at the panel, between guests and the ladies themselves.

Here, we’ve compiled the best (so far) for you, from an awkward Sen. Tim Scott interview, to a blunder with The View‘s EP, to Griffin calling out her former boss Donald Trump, so keep scrolling to see some of The View’s wildest moments of 2023.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.

In one of the most heated disagreements since Alyssa Farah Griffin joined the Hot Topics table last year, she and Sunny Hostin got into it over Former VP Mike Pence when Griffin refused to comment on Pence’s presidential campaign until she heard more from him. The ex-White House staffer’s stance prompted Hostin to accuse her of being “incapable of defending a man” she worked for — referring to Pence — which set her off.

“Sunny likes to make it personal with me,” she fumed, as Hostin ignored her and read off a list of Pence’s political failures. “Are you gonna give me a chance to answer? I mean, this is absurd. This is not what the show is about. This is Barbara Walters’ legacy. Let the woman speak.”

When the chaos showed no signs of fading Whoopi Goldberg finally jumped in to end the segment early, with Griffin mumbling, “What a disgrace.”

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that Sunny Hostin will never let Alyssa Farah Griffin live down her time working for the Trump administration, even though she has spoken out against the former president since her resignation in 2020. In one of many instances, Hostin implied that Griffin may be a “hypocrite” after she brought up concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s age. Hostin pointed out that while Biden may be 80 — which is seven years past the average male life expectancy — Trump, 76, is not too far behind.

“I don’t think you’re a hypocrite, Alyssa, and I would never call you that,” Hostin shaded. “But I hope that when you worked for the President — that older President who I think we have a clip of — could not walk down a ramp, could not hold a glass of water with one hand–”

Griffin then snapped, “Well, Sunny, guess what? I’m not supporting him for four more years,” before Hostin continued, “But I hope you had those discussions with yourself and your colleagues when you worked for that guy.”

Once in a while, Whoopi Goldberg gets in there to shut down some misinformation, and she didn’t waste any time doing so when it came to Alyssa Farah Griffin’s claims that the left doesn’t care about mental health during a heated gun debate.

The Republican co-host, who believes both political parties “bear responsibility” when it comes to guns in America, pointed out that the “left will not touch the mental health side of this and the right won’t touch the gun side,” leaving Goldberg to fire back, “That is not accurate.”

Sunny Hostin then chimed in, urging people to “stop blaming mental health,” to which Griffin – who assured the co-hosts that she’s “not stigmatizing mental health” – argued, “People who shoot up Sandy Hook — that’s not a person in their right mind.”

Sometimes we just have to say, “Poor Brian Teta.” While The View executive producer, who seldomly appears on camera, is typically more reserved than the women, he became clearly agitated when they brought his wife into a conversation on a day when she was in the audience.

“I said specifically, under no circumstances go to my wife in the audience,” he told the panel after they grilled his wife about their marriage on live television.

Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin claimed, “I did not hear that,” while Alyssa Farah Griffin added, “You knew we were going to!”

Once a Florida girl, always a Florida girl! While Ana Navarro is consistently outspoken against Fl. Gov. Ron DeSantis and his policies, there is nothing that will make her pack her bags and leave her home state – and Sunny Hostin learned the hard way during a March 2023 episode of The View.

After Hostin suggested that she would be “happier in New York,” Navarro snapped, “I’m not gonna move! I’m gonna stay in Florida and I’m gonna fight from there. So don’t tell me to move again.”

The entire debacle frustrated Joy Behar, who scrambled to throw the show to commercial break amidst the bickering. “Ana! Oh my, God,” she exclaimed, while Navarro doubled down, “They tell me that. They tell me, ‘Move.’ I’m not moving.”

Whoopi Goldberg gave Sen. Tim Scott quite the memorable experience when the conservative politician stopped by the show in June. After Scott was a Hot Topic himself, he joined The View to spar with the ladies in real life, but he didn’t exactly emerge the victor.

Scott was immediately humbled by Goldberg, who at one point got up from her seat at the Hot Topics table to face him herself as he tried to explain his views on how his party has helped advance progress for Black Americans. Scott also got some heat from Ana Navarro after he blocked her out in attempting to engage with Goldberg. It was a rough one.

Alyssa Farah Griffin may have left the White House, but she can’t seem to quite escape her former employer: Donald Trump. Griffin is often forced to battle with the former POTUS on The View, including a recent moment in June when she responded to his claims that she changed her politics to join the talk show.

Her retort? “I was in more Oval Office meetings with him than I can count. I briefed him in his cabin on Air Force One, I’ve been on Marine One with him. I know him. I’m telling you he’s unfit for office.”

Before she blasted Trump’s 2024 hopes on live TV, Griffin also warned other Oval Office hopefuls about the pitfalls of working for Trump. During a March episode, the conservative commentator delivered advice to “Trump staffers or people who think about working with him.”

Looking right into the camera, Griffin said, “All it comes with is a lot of legal bills. Don’t do it.”

Whoopi Goldberg has been on The View for years, and she’s got the formula locked down by now. Still, that hasn’t stopped her new co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin from encroaching on her duties every now and then. The View got tense twice this year as Griffin tried to switch topics or end segments — both of which fall under Goldberg’s responsibilities.

In May, Griffin got in hot water with her co-host for trying to cut to commercial as Goldberg demanded she “spit out” a remark she had started to say but never finished. After Griffin said, “We’ll come back,” referring to an impending ad break, an exasperated Goldberg replied, “No, spit it out!”

The awkward exchange was preceded by another moment just days earlier when she tried to skip over a discussion about the politics and ethics of the Met Gala and fast-forward to the fashion chat.

“But on a lighter note, can I tell you about my favorite looks?” she asked, but Goldberg interjected before she could carry on, saying, “Wait, wait, wait. Before you move us on, let’s make sure that we’ve exhausted this conversation.”

Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Farah Griffin didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye during an uncomfortable argument about abortion access during a March episode of The View. While discussing Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to stop business with Walgreens after the company chose not to sell abortion medication in some states, Griffin criticized the politician while her co-hosts celebrated it.

“I think this is the wrong target by Gov. Newsom, just to take the other side on it. Walgreens is following a state law,” she said, adding, “You can’t target the companies, and Gavin Newsom has made a name for himself after going after Ron Desantis … for targeting Disney,” but Goldberg wasn’t having it.

After Griffin tried to mention Newsom’s choice “to take a vacation while people are dying in San Bernardino,” Goldberg cut her off, sharply telling her, “That has nothing to do with what we’re talking about right now. Let’s stick to this.”

The View coasters

While many feuds erupt between co-stars, there’s one sneaky — and smelly — nemesis of all of The View hosts. Farts were an unofficial guest at the Hot Topics table this year, with some memorable interruptions and even an addition to the set to help curb the unwelcome commotion.

It all kicked off in January when Alyssa Farah Griffin was entertained by a flatulent noise coming from the table, but the hijinks didn’t stop there. In April, the show had to add coasters to the table to stop fart-like noises from coming from their mugs during live tapings.

The ridiculousness reached an all-time high when farts became a topic on Sunny Hostin’s Watch What Happens Live appearance in May. She was forced to apologize for saying Whoopi Goldberg farts the most on The View, admitting she was mistaking the moving mugs for fart noises and took Goldberg at her word when she jokingly took the blame.
