Police received reports a man in his 50s entered the water and was seen in distress before failing to resurface about 3pm yesterday.

A multi-agency search, involving local police as well as Surf Lifesavers, Marine Rescue NSW and a Queensland rescue helicopter, swiftly got underway.

It was called off overnight but resumed this morning.

Police are appealing for anyone who might have seen the man around this time. He is described as being of Caucasian appearance and aged in his 50s.

The man was wearing light-coloured board shorts.
