A search is underway after a person involved in a fishing competition disappeared after falling overboard.

Crews from the NSW Water Police, Marine Rescue NSW as well as the Lifesaver helicopter, are searching the area 55km off the Newcastle coast, north of Sydney.

The person fell overboard around 1pm, with emergency services called 35 minutes later, NSW Police said.
