Police and the SES are searching for a man who was swept away in floodwaters in northern NSW.

Emergency services responded to reports of a four-wheel drive being washed off a bridge at Wild Cattle Creek Bridge near Old Coramba Road, and into fast-running waters north-east of Dorrigo.

The driver was able to leave the car and grab onto a tree, 30 metres from the river bank.

Police said they were speaking with the man for some time.

Shortly after 3pm, the man was swept off the tree.

He was seen disappearing beneath the surface of the water.

Police said he has not been seen since.

Helicopters are on the way to the site to assist in the search.
