A sea plane carrying five people crashed into the waters in the Whitsundays in a terrifying incident during a joy flight.

The DHC-2 Beaver floatplane was travelling over the world-famous Whitehaven Beach when the plane went into the water sometime between 8.30 and 9am, on Saturday.

The plane is understood to have ditched into the ocean with a pilot and four passengers on board.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman confirmed it was investigating the incident.

Nobody on-board was injured during the crash.

The pilot is understood to be from the Whitsundays and the passengers are from Sydney. The plane was later towed to the beach, the Cairns Post reported.

‘The ATSB is gathering further information to better understand the circumstances of the accident,’ the spokesman told the newspaper.

It’s understood the plane was attempting to land on the water off the beach before it crashed into the ocean.

The incident comes after a 58-year-old man died at Chance Bay – also on Whitsunday Island – on Wednesday.

Emergency services rushed to the beach following reports of a medical emergency just before 6pm.

Paramedics treated the man but he later died at the scene.

Queensland Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
