The 10-year-old boy critically injured in the Sea World helicopter crash is improving after some serious scares but faces a mammoth six-hour operation today, according to a family friend.
Nicholas’s dad, Simon, has been asking for prayers for his battling little boy while grieving the loss of his wife, Vanessa, who died in the two-chopper collision on the Gold Coast last Monday along with a pilot and a British couple.

This morning, family friend Charlie Bakhos shared an update from Simon to Facebook.

“Nick has had an update, lungs have improved, swelling and lung capacity has gone better,” he said in a screenshot of a text message.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday) is a big day for him.”

According to the text message, Nicholas was facing five surgeries across six hours, in what his dad described as a “major test on his body, lungs and heart”.

After many days fighting for life in the Gold Coast University Hospital, Bakhos said Nicholas had been moved to the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

“At first things weren’t looking good at all, then there was a scare finding jet fuel had gotten in his lungs,” he said.

“After all the prayers, all glory to God, there’s been some miracles with small wins overcoming these setbacks which even amazed doctors and nurses.”

Geelong mother and son Winnie de Silva were also critically injured in the crash last Monday but their conditions later improved in hospital.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 3, Neil De Silva has described the moment a helicopter carrying his wife, Winnie, and her son, Leon, (both pictured) crashed near Sea World on the Gold Coast on Monday, January 2, 2022. (9News – Sam Cucchiara)

Pilot Ashley Jenkinson died in the collision between two Sea World helicopters aircraft, along with UK couple Ron and Diane Hughes.

More than $140,000 has been raised across three GoFundMe fundraisers for those killed in the crash and dozens of bunches of flowers have been left near the crash site.

Jenkinson will be farewelled this Friday at a funeral on the Gold Coast.
