Sahith Theegala has withdrawn from the PGA Championship on the eve of the tournament

Sahith Theegala has withdrawn from the PGA Championship on the eve of the tournament due to a neck injury.

Theegala was due to play with Max McGreevy and Sepp Straka on the first two days but his place has now been given to Alex Smalley.

The 27-year-old had to pull out of last week’s Truist Championship after three rounds because of the injury.

He opened with rounds of 69 and 71 at the $20million, no-cut signature event in Philadelphia before falling into last place in the field with an eight-over 78 on Saturday.

Theegala, 27, is ranked No. 31 in the world entering this week and has won just one PGA Tour event – the Fortinent Championship in September 2023.

He has finished in the top 10 at just one major championship – the Masters in 2023.

Theegala’s place has now been given to Alex Smalley, who has just hours to prepare himself

Smalley, meanwhile, arrives at Quail Hollow in good form after a T-5 finish at last week’s Myrtle Beach Classic.

The 28-year-old attended Duke University and made his PGA Tour debut at the US Open in 2017, where he missed the cut.

He does have experience of playing in the PGA Championship before and this week will mark his third appearance in the tournament.

Smalley finished T-23 in 2023 at Oak Hill Country Club but missed the cut last year at Valhalla.
