Passengers aboard the cruise ship Ruby Princess have won their class action against Carnival Cruises after a COVID-19 outbreak broke out onboard in 2020.

The cruise operator was found to have been negligent in setting off on the cruise, which took place as COVID-19 was erupting around the world.

The class action accused Carnival, which chartered the ship, and the Ruby Princess’ owner-operator Princess Cruise Lines, of breaching duties of care and Australian consumer law.

Almost 700 people on board were infected with COVID-19.

In total, 28 died as a result of the virus.

The ill-fated cruise left Sydney on March 8, 2020, for a trip around New Zealand.

However, it cut short the 13-night journey and returned to Australia on March 19 after COVID-19 cases were reported on board.
