‘Brother’ and ‘sister’ could be banned from official documents and other public communication and be replaced by the term ‘siblings’, under updated anti-discrimination laws in one Australian state.

NSW is overhauling its Anti-Discrimination Act of 1977 next year and preliminary submissions are already pouring in for what could be a highly contested battle between differing lobbyists.

Some advocates are calling for for the term ‘sibling’ to replace ‘brother’ and ‘sister’ in officially sanctioned language and for ‘different sex’ to be used instead of ‘opposite sex’.

One area likely to spark bitter debate is over whether trans ‘women’ can be excluded from ‘single-sex spaces’.

A feminist group is demanding the right to reserve areas, services and sports for biological women and girls by denying right of access by ‘transgender-identifying males’.

The group also demands the right to label biological men as male ‘regardless of those men’s chosen gender identity’.

The Australian Christian Lobby has also urged the Minns Labor government not to insert ‘new definitions’ regarding gender identity or sexual orientation.

The lobby group argued there were ‘no discernible problem’ with provisions and ‘no compelling rationale’ to change them.

The NSW government is also expected to consider Equality Bill measures proposed by independent MP Alex Greenwich as part of the 1977 Act’s review.

Mr Greenwich has proposed more extensive anti-discrimination protections, which include banning private schools from discriminating against LGBTQ teachers and students.

Religious advocates have already stated they are prepared to fight this.

Mr Greenwich said his measures would reflect and encourage a more inclusive NSW.

‘I’m really proud my LGBTQ Equality Bill is helping inform this process,’ he said.

The Bill introduced by Mr Greenwich also allows for a wider decriminalisation of sex work.

The debate on updating the Anti-Discrimination Act been slated for February.

In November, it was revealed the Australian Defence Force had banned the term ‘unmanned’ when referring to drones as part of wide-ranging efforts to make its language more politically correct.

Senior officers spearheaded a ‘gender neutral project’ in 2021 and 2022 during which they examined official ADF documents to find areas where language could be changed to be more inclusive.

A drone, previously known as ‘unmanned aerial vehicle’ (UAV) or ‘unmanned aerial system’ (UAS), was renamed to ‘uncrewed’ while other changes under consideration included replacing ‘man-hours’ with ‘staff hours’ and ‘he/she’ with ‘they’.

The directive to refer to drones as ‘uncrewed’ appears to originate from director general of the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA), Air Commodore Joseph Medved, according to Freedom of Information documents obtained by
