A ride share driver has been arrested after he allegedly fired a water pistol in the Sydney CBD near NSW Parliament House, sparking a major police operation.

The alleged incident unfolded on Hospital Road at about 1pm on Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene with six police cars and more than a dozen officers attending following reports of a man discharging what was initially believed to be a replica firearm/

NSW Police initially alleged the replica firearm was discharged several times into the ground.

‘The bloke apparently drives along Hospital Road to Parliament House and fires what looks like a glock into the Domain,’ a parliamentary source told the Daily Telegraph. 

Police said the man left the location in a vehicle prior to police arrival.

A crime scene was established and officers searched the Domain parklands directly behind Parliament House, reportedly looking for casings from the alleged incident. 

Detectives spoke with NSW Parliament special constables and Premier Chris Minns’ close protection officers. 

Mr Minns and other state MPs were inside the Parliament at the time.  

Following inquiries, police arrested a male ride share driver in Mascot in the city’s south shortly after 5pm.

Officers also seized a water pistol, which will be subject to further examination.

The man was taken to Mascot Police Station where he’s currently being interviewed by officers.

No charges have yet been laid.
