An elderly woman has died after she was struck by a car with her distraught husband arrested at the scene.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was hit in a driveway on Nichols Avenue in Revesby, south-west Sydney, at about 3:15pm on Sunday.

Paramedics attempted to treat the woman, however she could not be saved.

Her husband – who is understood to have been behind the wheel – was arrested and taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing.

Footage showed the distraught man holding his hands to his head as he sat on a nearby wall.

A woman was seen comforting him while wiping tears away from her eyes.

Two other women and a man also provided their support to the man.

He was later escorted by officers into the back of a police car that was waiting outside the house.
