Peta Kerr, 33, was the driver of a black Volkswagon Touareg which collided head-on with a Toyota Landcruiser towing two jet skis on State Highway 1, Leithfield about 5.10pm on Sunday.
The driver of the Toyota, Bryan Kerr, 51, was also killed in the crash.
Grieving friends and family of the pair, who are not related, have posted tributes to them online.
“My beautiful wife and loving mum to our beautiful son … taken from us way too soon. Rest in peace my beautiful wife,” Peta Kerr’s husband, Leonard Bourton, said.
Bryan Kerr, from Christchurch, was on his way home from a fishing trip in Kaikoura, his friend Corey Rogers said.
“He was an amazing man, always happy, [who] touched many people’s lives,” Rogers told Stuff.
Kerr was a member of the Canterbury Jet Sports Club, which also paid tribute to him online.
“BK was a great character to have in the club and we will miss him dearly.”
Another friend said Kerr was a great man who he enjoyed playing rugby with. Others said he was a “nice guy” and always keen for a yarn.
Peta Kerr was travelling north with her infant son at the time of the crash.
