After hearing a massive crash, residents in a quiet Sydney suburban street ran out to help the victim.

Instead, when people came out of their homes on Copperfield Drive in Rosemeadow last night, they ended up making a citizen’s arrest.

The alleged drunk driver tried to flee the scene after crashing into two parked cars.

“His hand was on the key trying to turn it, I just grabbed him – grabbed his hand with the key in it – and marched him over to the footpath,” resident Mark Aylott said.

“I wouldn’t let him walk off the footpath because I knew there was a possibility he could run. Now, I’m not gonna let that happen.”

The 54-year-old man was arrested at the scene by police, who allege the man returned a reading of 0.191 on a roadside breath test – close to four times the legal limit.

A red SUV belonging to a family with eight children was hit during the incident – it’s uninsured and likely a write-off.

But the family are grateful the outcome wasn’t worse, telling 9News their kids often play in the front yard where their car was hit.

“I’m glad it was that time of night,” witness Rihannon Snape told 9News.

“I’m glad no other kids were out the front because it could have been so much worse.”

The man was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.
