Ranking the Jets head coach options, from the perfect fits to the no-thank-yous

The Jets have cast a wide, wide net in their search for a new head coach.

The team already has begun interviewing candidates, and the organization put in a long list of requests for interviews with other candidates this week. Just what the Jets should be looking for is up for debate. Some Jets fans want an offensive wizard to come in and give the team something it has not had in years — a top 10 offense. Others want the CEO type who is not going to call plays on either side of the ball but will oversee everything. Many fans are hoping for the disciplinarian after watching the team play undisciplined football for too long.

I can see all of these arguments. I have been through enough of these searches to know that no one knows what the secret sauce is. I thought the Jets got it right in 2021, when they hired Robert Saleh, who was a hot candidate at the time. When Todd Bowles was hired, he had been the assistant coach of the year the season before. Adam Gase was an offensive mind, who had overseen the highest-scoring offense in NFL history.

The Jets have tried many different avenues, and they have not worked. So, I don’t pretend to have the answers when it comes to who the Jets hire. But I have some opinions.
