Randall Cobb’s first taste of Jets success wasn’t even intended for him

After myriad low points, Randall Cobb finally experienced his first bit of success with the Jets.

He opened the scoring during the team’s 30-6 upset over the Texans on Sunday with a 15-yard touchdown reception, giving the Jets a 7-0 lead in the third quarter.

It was his first touchdown as a Jet, and just his fourth catch all year since signing a one-year deal with the team to reunite with longtime former teammate Aaron Rodgers.

He missed time with a shoulder injury, but had also been a healthy scratch in recent weeks until Jason Brownlee’s injury opened up a spot for him to be active on Sunday.

Cobb admitted this season has been difficult personally.

“It’s been a war,” Cobb said Monday afternoon on a Zoom call. “Obviously, I got hurt, then missed some time and was ready to go and was a healthy scratch for a few weeks. Then I was up and only played a couple of snaps. It’s definitely been a roller-coaster ride, that’s part of it. …

“I know I can’t put myself out there, I can’t make the call to be active. If I could, I’d be out there as much as I could.”

Ironically, Cobb was not supposed to be on the field for his touchdown reception.

The play was designed for Garrett Wilson, but he needed a blow to rest and Cobb took his place.

But after weeks of being an afterthought, Cobb helped spark an offensive eruption.

“Some practices, [I was on the] scout team,” Cobb said. “Some practices, not getting any offensive reps. Being out there, really, it’s been a little difficult. But that’s part of this game. This league will humble you day in and day out.”

Center Connor McGovern had season-ending knee surgery, Robert Saleh revealed on Monday.

McGovern had been on injured reserve since injuring his knee during the team’s Oct. 29 win over the Giants, and his surgery had not yet been made public.

Rodgers has previously targeted the Jets’ Dec. 24 clash against the Commanders for his return from his torn Achilles, and TMZ reported Monday that he was expected to be medically cleared by that date.

Saleh did not give a firm answer whether that date was feasible.

“We’re approaching it as if he’s in rehab and, when the doctor gives us his doctor’s note to clear him for the next stage, that’s when we’ll have those discussions,” Saleh said.

Saleh did not confirm or deny a report from the Deseret News — Zach Wilson’s hometown newspaper in Utah — that Wilson has already been told he’ll be traded after the season, saying he won’t discuss private conversations with players.
