Queenslander 'remorseful' for drunk, naked rampage in Indonesia

Risby-Jones’ family have released a statement on his behalf in which they said he was “disturbed by his actions and takes full responsibility for them”.

”To all who I have disrespected and hurt, I am truly sorry, please forgive me,” Risby-Jones said in the statement.

“He is extremely remorseful and apologetic and acknowledges the pain he has caused the victim Mr Edi Ron and his family,” his family said.

“He further acknowledges the waste of resources his actions have caused the Simeulue Police and Mr Jatmiko and Mr Mayyuhdi.”

The police report said local Edi Ron suffered injuries to his feet after Risby-Jones allegedly pushed a motorcycle into him.

Ron received 50 stiches in hospital.

The Australian’s drunk, naked rampage through the streets prompted residents to threaten to burn the Moon Beach Resort down on the surfing island, off the coast of Sumatra.

The victim’s wife Eri Saljuana had made a report to police, who named Risby-Jones as a suspect, and four witnesses had been questioned.

His family said he was embarrassed and ashamed of his behaviour.

Risby-Jones told his family he wanted to apologise to Saljuana, the witnesses and the Indonesian people for disrespecting their culture and laws.

Risby-Jones also apologised to Australia for “embarrassing them”.

Public canings are a regular punishment in the province, meaning the 23-year-old could be lashed up to 40 times, as well as face five years in prison if convicted.

The province enforces Sharia law, meaning the sale and consumption of alcohol is banned.

Police chief Jatmiko – who, like many Indonesians, goes by one name – confirmed the Queenslander would not be deported.

He is expected to face court next week.
