Queensland Police have admitted a victim of crime’s personal details were accidentally released due to an IT loophole after it was revealed by 9News.

Assistant police commissioner Mark Kelly today gave evidence police became aware of the matter yesterday, when 9News exposed how victim information could be released to offenders over the phone.

“The first time we became aware of the issues that were before Channel 9, that was yesterday,” he said.

An investigation has since begun.

“We are taking this extremely seriously and we are trying to get a complete understanding of what is happening,” Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said.

In parliamentary hearings today, police revealed at least one victim’s information has been released in a case where the offender is currently before court.

“One person’s details is released, as I said, we take that very seriously,” Kelly said.

Opposition leader David Crisafulli questioned what crime the incident related to.

“It’s a matter of reviewing of how that information has been released and I believe it was from harassing phone calls so whether that was from a domestic relationship I’m not sure,” Kelly said.

Emails were sent out to police across the state today, urging all officers “to ensure sensitive information such as victim addresses are redacted”.

Multiple investigations are now underway, not just into how victim’s information was released but also how many other times it may have happened.
