A health alert has been issued in Queensland after a person infected with measles visited numerous tourist spots.

The tourist, who had just arrived in Australia from abroad, was suffering from the disease while moving around the area.

‘The case was unknowingly infectious as they travelled around Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast between Wednesday 2 April 2025, and Saturday 5 April 2025, visiting several businesses and locations,’ Metro North Public Health Unit said.

The adult visited Australia Zoo, a mini golf place, several train stations, shops and hostels last week.

They visited several spots in Surfers Paradise on Wednesday including Yo-chi, 11/3240 Surfers Paradise Blvd, between 10.15am and 11am and Cotton On, 27 Cahill Ave, between 11am and 12.30pm.

On Thursday, the patient visited Brooki Bakehouse, 15 Marshall Street, Fortitude Valley, between 12pm and 12:30pm, Sushi Hub, 136 Queen Street, between 1.30pm and 2pm and Cotton On, Queen Adelaide Building 90/90 Queen Street, between 2pm and 3.10pm.

They arrived at Central Station Brisbane on Friday at around 6.45am before catching the Nambour train to Beerwah Station, leaving 7.07am and arriving at 8.27am.

Between 8.30am and 5pm, the tourist spent the day at Australia Zoo before catching the Springfield train from Beerwah Station to Central Station Brisbane, leaving at 5.03pm and arriving 6.26pm.

Later on Friday, between 7.45pm and 11pm, the holidaymaker could been found in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Emergency Department waiting room.

The locations mentioned above do not pose an ongoing risk to people.

Metro North Public Health physician Dr Alexandra Uren has advised anyone who was at these locations during these times should monitor themselves for symptoms for 18 days from when they may have had contact.

‘If they do develop symptoms, they should seek medical advice,’ Dr Uren said.

‘Early symptoms of measles include a fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and red, inflamed eyes. Those symptoms then progress to a blotchy red rash, which often starts on the face before becoming widespread.’

‘Measles symptoms typically start between seven and 18 days after infection.’

If you believe you are suffering from the illness, Dr Uren advises patients to call ahead before visiting their GP to allow the medical practice to take precautions to help prevent the illness speaking to others.
