Police have closed Queensland’s Bruce Highway south of Innisfail to search for a man after a woman was found with critical injuries following a suspected carjacking.

The woman was located with life-threatening injuries on Spina Court in Mighell, about 100km south of Cairns, at 4.15pm.

A short time later, a vehicle crashed on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket, before a man fled into the nearby area, according to police.

Police said residents and motorists have been advised to avoid the area in the interest of public safety.

“Do not slow down for anyone who tries to approach your vehicle,” a police spokesperson said.
