The body of an elderly woman has been found in a tragic end to a fortnight-long search by police.

Wendy Smith had been missing from her home in The Gap, in north-west Brisbane, for more than two weeks when her body was located late on February 18.

The 78-year-old was last seen at her Lahore Street home about 9pm on February 2.

It is believed the mother-of-three left the house on foot that night and was not heard from again.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

The devastating find follows an exhaustive search operation involving police helicopters and State Emergency Services.

The would-be rescuers swept the bushland and creeks surrounding The Gap to no avail.

Police divers also searched the Enoggera Reservoir in the days before Ms Smith’s body was discovered.

Queensland Police thanked volunteers and members of the community who had assisted in their search, including businesses who provided surveillance footage to help track the elderly woman’s last movements.

The 78-year-old leaves behind a husband and three children.

Queensland Police confirmed a report will be prepared for the coroner.
