Qantas has once again been named the world’s safest airline for 2023, after losing the top spot last year.
A typical presence at the top of the list, Qantas last year was just edged out by Air New Zealand.
The safety list is compiled annually by Airline Ratings, an online site that compiles data from 400 international websites.
Factors weighed up include pilot training, fleet age, and safety and engineering issues. – though notably not customer satisfaction.
In picking Qantas for the top spot, Airline Ratings editors said that during its 100-year operational history as the world’s oldest continuously operating airline, it had amassed an “amazing record of firsts in operations and safety and is now accepted as the industry’s most experienced airline”.
That said, there wasn’t much daylight between first and second, with editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas noting all top 20 airlines were “outstanding”.

Air New Zealand took second spot, while Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines filled out the top five.
Virgin Australia/Atlantic came in at number 10.
