A Qantas co-pilot has been forced to make a priority landing after the captain experienced chest pains during a flight to Sydney.

The co-pilot of Qantas flight QF505, which had departed Brisbane, requested a priority landing at Sydney Airport on Monday morning.

The captain experienced chest pains shortly after the flight departed at 6.20am, and while it was still several hundreds of kilometres north of Sydney.

The plane was put into a holding pattern as the co-pilot took over the controls and notified air traffic control of the medical emergency, requesting an expedited landing ‘with possible assistance needed’.

The co-pilot also told crew members to bring defibrillators into the cockpit.

It’s understood the defibrillator’s pads were put on the captain, but it was not used.

The co-pilot then took over the controls and notified air traffic control of the medical emergency, requesting an expedited landing with ‘possible assistance needed’.

The plane did two loops over Newcastle while in the holding pattern before heading to the airport to land.

The captain taxied the plane – as it cannot be taxied from the first officer’s seat – to the gate at Sydney airport.

Paramedics treated the pilot at the gate before he was rushed to hospital.

A Qantas spokeswoman explained the aircraft, which was carrying 127 passengers and six crew members, safely landed as ‘normal’.

‘One of our pilots experienced chest pains during a flight from Brisbane to Sydney on Monday,’ she told NewsWire.

‘The other pilot was operating the aircraft at the time and landed the aircraft into Sydney as normal.

The pilot was treated by paramedics at the gate and transferred to hospital.
