A powerful earthquake has been detected off the coast of Broome, in Western Australia’s far north.
The 4.9 magnitude tremor was detected just after 7pm (AEST) on Monday about 200 kilometres offshore, west of the popular tourist town, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Some residents said they felt their cupboards shake and witnessed their house plants move – despite there being no breeze.

One said it went on for almost five minutes, while another claimed ornaments moved on their mantelpiece.

‘The whole house and windows were shaking,’ said Josh Osgood.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat from the tremor.
‘Tremors felt in Broome around 5.02 pm WST this afternoon due to an undersea 4.9 magnitude earthquake offshore about 200 km from Broome,’ the Bureau tweeted.
